holmes luigi...the pattern

here it is...September's free pattern...

holmes luigi's hat
by pamela w allen

this is an easy, rolled-brim hat with a tiny bit of color-work...the original, above, was knit in Brown Sheep's Lamb's Pride Bulky (you can purchase it here), a lovely, inexpensive wool/mohair yarn...it is very stretchy and will fit heads from 18" to 22"...

I have not had this pattern test-knit...please let me know if you have any problems!

happy knitting...

you will need:

  • two skeins of Brown Sheep's LAMB'S PRIDE BULKY--one in grey heather (color A), one in onyx (color B)

  • a couple yards of the same yarn in creme (color C)

  • 1-16" circular in size US 10/ 6mm (or whatever size you need to obtain gauge)

  • 1 set of dpn's

  • tapestry needle
gauge is 3.5 stitches per inch

directions:
Cast 60 stitches on to your circular needle (I used the long-tail method) with color A. Knit for approximately 4.5 inches.
Next round: Knit 1 A, knit 2 C to the end (check this link for help, if you are new to working with two colors)
Knit two more rounds with A.
Join in color B and knit for approximately 1.25" (about 7 rounds).

The crown decrease is fast and creates a slightly flat crown...
Round 1:  Knit 4, knit 2 together to end...50 stitches remain.
Rounds 2 & 4:  Knit
Round 3:  Knit 3, knit 2 together to end...40 stitches remain.
Round 5:  Knit 2, knit 2 together to end...30 stitches remain. Change to double-pointed needles.
Round 6:  Knit 1 B, knit 2 C to end.
Rounds 7:  Knit (color B).
Round 8:  Knit 1, knit 2 together to end...20 stitches remain.
Round 9:  Knit 2 together to end...10 stitches remain.
Knit these 10 stitches for four rounds, then knit two together until five stitches remain.  Knit  these stitches for  three or four rounds and then decrease to three stitches.  Knit these three stithes, in i-cord for about an inch.  Bind off, weave in ends, wet block the hat...

et voilà !!!
