for one glorious moment, the sun peaks out from the clouds...I love the rain, we need the rain, but doesn't that sun feel grand?

the april hat

simple, simple, simple...a rolled brim hat with a touch of eyelet lace and a band of seed stitch...

...here it is...the free pattern of the month...

materials:

You will need a skein of dk or worsted weight cotton or wool or wool/bamboo or really any lovely yarn that has a nice stitch definition.  I used Paton's Cotton Perle...You will also need a 16" circular in a US 5 (3.75mm) or US 6 (4mm) or whatever gives you the right gauge and a set of double-pointed needles in the same size.

gauge:

And speaking of gauge...If you are making this to fit a 20" to 22" head, you will need to knit at a gauge of 4.25 stitches per inch.  If you want a smaller hat, knit the hat at a smaller gauge (in a lighterweight yarn).  The little green hat below was knit at a gauge of 7 stitches per inch in a lovely fingering, on 84 stitches, and fits an infant...

directions:

Cast on 78 stitches. Join your work (the obligatory warning: being careful not to twist your work!), marking the beginning of the round if you wish, and knit for about an inch. Purl one round. Knit one round. The next two rounds are your bit of lace...

• 1. K1, yo, k2tog—repeat to the end.
• 2. K2tog, yo, k1—repeat to the end.

Knit one round, getting rid of one stitch (k2tog somewhere, anywhere on the round) so that you now have 77 stitches. Purl one round. Knit one round. Knit in seed stitch for about 11/4 inches. Knit one round. Purl one round. Knit in stockinette for about another 2 inches (or when the hat measures about 4.5” to 5”), then begin the crown decrease. It is a good idea to try the hat on at this point and adjust the length accordingly—or simply measure against a favorite hat.


The crown is shaped very simply by decreasing 7 stitches evenly every other row until you have 21 stitches remaining, then decreasing 7 stitches every other row until 7 stitches remain, thus:


1st decrease round: * Knit 9, Knit two stitches together (K2tog) repeat from * to end of round—70 stitches remain


2nd and all even rounds: Knit


3rd round: *Knit 8, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—63 stitches remain


5th round: *Knit 7, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—56 stitches remain


7th round: *Knit 6, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—49 stitches remain


CHANGE TO DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES


9th round: *Knit 5, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—42 stitches remain


11th round: *Knit 4, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—35 stitches remain


13th round: *Knit 3, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—28 stitches remain


15th round: *Knit 2, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—21 stitches remain


16th round: *Knit 1, K2tog, repeat from * to end of round—14 stitches remain


17th round: K2tog to end of round—7 stitches remain



Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Tack down well. Add pom-pom if desired.

et voilà!!!

sea song...

the idea for a border that travels up and around the body of the hat came to me one night as I lay in bed, unable to sleep.  Though the design still needs refining, I quite like the possiblities of this simple detail...

hats for twin babies in Frog Tree's Picoboo, a cotton/bamboo blend...

this yarn makes a lovely fabric for baby things, but I must say I did not like working with it--especially on the 12" circular.  It splits too, too easily...
