augustus...a scarf
gauge is not important...just keep it on the loose side
using a lovely bulky-weight yarn--or a strand of worsted wool with a strand of mohair held together-- cast 53 (multiples of 4 plus 1) stitches on a size 11/ 8mm (or whatever works for your yarn) needle...repeat the following rows until you have your desired length...
row 1: slip 1, knit 3, (slip 1 with yarn in back, knit 3)12 times, knit 1.
row 2: slip 1, knit 3, (slip 1 with yarn in front, knit 3)12 times, knit 1.
row 3: slip 1, knit 1, (slip 1 with yarn in back, knit 3)12 times, slip 1 with yarn in back, knit 2.
row 4: slip 1, knit 1, (slip 1 with yarn in front, purl 3) 12 times, slip 1 with yarn in front, knit 2.
so...all slipped stitches are slipped purlwise (including the first stitch of each row)...keep the first two stitches in garter...and, yes, you are purling on that fourth row...
finish by casting off as you wish...you may want to add fringe at each end...or some other embellishment, perhaps? this would make a lovely throw or baby blanket, too...endless possiblities, no?
note bene...this "pattern" has not been test-knit...
